Public Safety Warning: ATM Distraction Thefts

Police are warning the public to remain vigilant following an increase in reports of distraction thefts at cash machines and shortly after bank withdrawals.

Offenders are targeting people as they withdraw cash, often using distraction techniques to divert attention while money or bank cards are stolen. In some cases, victims have been followed after leaving a bank or ATM and approached when distracted for only a few seconds.

How these thefts happen:

Offenders may claim you have dropped something, such as a bank card

They may stand very close or use items (maps, bags, clothing) to distract you

Theft can happen extremely quickly while your attention is diverted

How to protect yourself:

Always shield the keypad when entering your PIN

Put cash and cards away securely before leaving the ATM

Be cautious of anyone approaching you or attempting to distract you

If something feels wrong, cancel the transaction and leave

Consider using ATMs in busy, well‑lit areas or going with someone you trust

If you believe you have been targeted or see suspicious behaviour around ATMs or banks, report it immediately to staff or police.

Your awareness can help prevent this type of crime and protect others in the community.
